Should you upgrade to a three-phase electricity supply?
In the UK, most homes rely on a single-phase electricity supply, limiting electric car charging to around 7kW. However, commercial properties with a three-phase network can use faster chargers like the 22kW unit.
To identify a three-phase supply, check the electrical fuse: one fuse for single-phase and three 100-amp fuses for three-phase, as recommended by UK Power Networks.
Typical domestic installations include a three-pin plug (2.3kW), home charge units (3.6kW, 7.4kW), and a high-capacity 22kW unit. All, except the 22kW unit, work with standard single-phase home electricity.
Concerning upgrades, homeowners often choose three-phase when converting or extending properties, receiving up to 70kVA. While three-phase theoretically offers faster charging, car compatibility varies. Upgrading incurs costs ranging from £3,000 to £20,000. Many prefer a single-phase 7.4kW charger at approximately £1,000, deeming three-phase unnecessary for most.
Danny Morgan of Smart Home Charge suggests three-phase is overkill for regular users, akin to charging a smartphone faster overnight. He notes its utility when charging multiple cars simultaneously, a rare scenario. The recommendation stands to choose a 3.6kW or 7.4kW home charger and utilise rapid charging while on the move.
